Enforcers Goaltender Named to IIHF Championship Roster

by Jon Kliment

Yesterday the South African Ice Hockey Federation announced their Senior National team for the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Championship taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria starting April 22nd, 2019. One name released was very familiar as backup goaltender Charl Pretorius was named to the roster for the second straight season.

Charl attended Northwood School in Lake Placid on a scholarship, Elmira College on a Key Award and will attend Saint Georges University to complete a Doctor Of Medicine starting in Aug 2019. He wants to return to Elmira to complete his clinical rotations in Aug 2021.

When the Enforcers needed someone to step in at practice, Charl was an obvious choice being just down the road at Elmira College. Pretorius joined the Enforcers on an emergency basis as Troy Passingham dealt with an injury and would serve as a backup to Nick Niedert this past weekend.

Pretorius has represented South Africa in International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships on numerous occasions having been named the best goalkeeper at the World Championships three times. In 2014, he led South Africa to the IIHF U18 World Championship for Group B and then in April of 2016, following his freshman season, Charl helped South Africa win a bronze medal at the 2016 IIHF Division III World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. Most recently Pretorius earned the Best Goalie Award at the 2018 IIHF Division III World Championships, which were hosted in his native South Africa.

The Enforcers are thrilled to hear of the appointment of Charl to the 2019 World Championship team and wish him all the best at the International tournament.
